Singing for the Brain – Rocking Around the Clock at New Fairholme

Shropshire Music Service (SMS) and Coverage Care Services are continuing to strike the perfect chord with their weekly Singing for the Brain sessions — bringing joy, laughter, and connection to residents across Shropshire through the power of music.

This Shropshire based project is being organised in conjunction with the Alzheimer’s Society.

This week’s session at New Fairholme care home was a special 1950s celebration, led by Kate from SMS alongside Liz, the Activities Manager. Dressed in retro style, they filled the room with energy and smiles as residents sang along to classics including All I Have to Do Is Dream, Hound Dog, Rock Around the Clock, and Blue Moon. The hand jive was an instant hit, with everyone joining in the rhythm and fun.

These sessions are part of a wider collaboration between SMS and Coverage Care designed to support people living with dementia and memory loss. By revisiting familiar songs, the project helps residents reconnect with treasured memories, build confidence, and enjoy meaningful moments together.

Dr Sarah Browne, Head of Shropshire Music Service, added:

“Our partnership with Coverage Care shows how powerful music can be. Singing familiar songs doesn’t just bring happiness, it rebuilds confidence, connection, and belonging.”
