Workshops & Performances FAQ

Music has the power to transform a school day into something unforgettable.

Through Shropshire Music Service (SMS) workshops and live performances, pupils get to experience music not just as listeners but as creators and performers.

These events bring rhythm, energy, and confidence into classrooms, assemblies, and whole-school celebrations, giving every child the chance to shine.

Here are answers to the questions schools most often ask when planning a workshop or performance with us.

What types of workshops and performances do you offer?

Shropshire Music Service (SMS) offers a diverse range of workshops and live music experiences to suit every school setting – from nurseries and primary classrooms to secondary stages.

Options include samba drumming, African percussion, body rhythm sessions, ukulele and recorder discovery days, songwriting, music technology, and musical theatre. We also run specialist projects like Riffs, our popular rock and pop workshop for young guitarists, drummers, vocalists, and keyboard players who want a real band experience.

Schools can also book interactive concerts and assemblies, where our tutors perform live across genres such as classical, folk, jazz, pop, and world music, often inviting pupils to join in. We design each event to reflect your school’s needs – whether you want a short energising session or a full-day musical celebration.

Every session is hands-on, inclusive, and age-appropriate, leaving pupils with a lasting sense of achievement and excitement for music.

Are workshops suitable for pupils with little or no musical experience?

Absolutely. Our workshops are designed to be accessible to everyone – even pupils who have never played an instrument before.

Our tutors are trained to create a warm, encouraging environment that builds confidence and curiosity. Pupils learn through rhythm, movement, and voice before progressing to instruments or ensemble work. Every activity is differentiated so that children of all abilities, including those with additional learning needs, can take part and succeed.

Younger pupils often find their first love for music during these sessions, while older ones discover new genres or instruments they might never have considered. By the end of each workshop, every child will have contributed to making music together – and that shared sense of success is often transformative.

How long do workshops last and how are they structured?

Workshops are flexible in both format and duration. They can run as a single one-hour session, a half-day experience, or a full-day project, depending on your goals and timetable.

Each session begins with an interactive warm-up to get everyone relaxed and engaged, followed by focused activities such as rhythm work, ensemble practice, or composition tasks. Our tutors often finish with a mini-performance or showcase, giving pupils the chance to share what they’ve learned with their peers.

For longer projects or term-based collaborations, we can plan progressive sessions that build towards a full school concert or community performance. This not only develops musical skills but also gives pupils a clear goal and sense of accomplishment.

What are the benefits of hosting a workshop or performance?

The benefits go far beyond the music itself. Pupils who take part in workshops and performances gain a wide range of transferable skills – including teamwork, focus, communication, and problem-solving.

Performing, even on a small scale, teaches confidence, discipline, and resilience. Pupils experience the satisfaction of working toward a shared goal and the pride of achieving it together.

For schools, the impact can be transformative. Workshops bring a burst of energy and creativity to the timetable, helping re-engage pupils and reinvigorate staff. They also strengthen your music curriculum offer, support Ofsted’s cultural capital priorities, and create opportunities to involve families and the wider community through shared performances.

Many schools tell us these experiences have long-lasting effects – boosting motivation, attendance, and even cross-curricular attainment.

How can our school book a workshop or performance?

It’s quick and straightforward. Simply contact Shropshire Music Service by phone or email to start the conversation. We’ll discuss your school’s needs, available dates, and preferred outcomes before suggesting the best format for your setting.

Once confirmed, we handle everything – from tutor allocation to instruments and materials. We can also integrate workshops into existing music programmes, special curriculum days, or end-of-term celebrations.

For older students, we can arrange progression pathways into Riffs rock and pop sessions or county ensembles. Whatever the size of your school or ambition of your project, SMS makes the process simple, inspiring, and entirely stress-free.
