What is Whole Class Instrumental Tuition?

Whole Class Instrumental Tuition gives every child in a class the opportunity to learn an instrument together, regardless of background, experience, or ability. Delivered by an experienced specialist tutor from Shropshire Music Service (SMS), sessions are fun, structured, and inclusive.

Pupils learn the basics of reading music, playing simple pieces, and performing as a group. Classes typically take place once a week during curriculum time and last for a full term or academic year. Instruments and resources are provided, making it simple for schools to integrate high quality music-making into the timetable.

This approach is proven to build confidence, teamwork, listening skills, and focus, while supporting key national curriculum aims. Every pupil experiences the joy of making music together, often for the first time.

What instruments can we choose for Whole Class Instrumental Tuition?

Schools can choose from a wide range of instruments including ukulele, violin, flute, clarinet, cornet, trumpet, and recorder. The selection depends on age, class size, and space available. Our range of starter instruments are ideal for younger classes: we also offer whole class instrumental tuition on DooDs, TooTs, pBuzz and pBones. These instruments are fantastic for younger learners, and they help schools plan for progression through the key stages

Our tutors work with you to decide what fits best for your setting, taking into account your pupils’ needs and your school’s long-term music goals.

All instruments are provided by SMS for the duration of the project, with maintenance and tuning handled by our team.

How long does a Whole Class project last?

Whole Class Instrumental Tuition can run for a single term or the full academic year, depending on your school’s objectives and budget. We always recommend a full academic year where possible to allow students to make progress.

Our tutors work closely with class teachers to ensure sessions align with the school timetable, using a balance of demonstration, group rehearsal, and performance preparation. Our programmes can also end with a celebration performance, where pupils share what they’ve learned with parents or the wider school.

How does Whole Class Instrumental Tuition support the curriculum?

Our schemes of work are benchmarked against the National Curriculum and Music Mark’s A Common Approach which allows us to focus on specific instrumental technique alongside listening, composition and creativity and performance, all while developing musical literacy.

Beyond the academic benefits, learning an instrument helps pupils develop essential life skills: focus, perseverance, teamwork, and confidence. Teachers often report improved engagement and behaviour, with pupils showing a stronger sense of pride and ownership in their work.

Whole Class Instrumental Tuition also helps schools meet Ofsted’s expectations for a broad and balanced curriculum by ensuring every child has meaningful access to music education
