Vocal Lessons

Vocal Lessons FAQ

Singing is one of the most joyful and confidence building parts of music.

Whether your child loves to perform or just wants to try something new, our vocal lessons help them find their voice in a fun and supportive way.

Here are some of the most common questions parents ask about singing lessons with Shropshire Music Service.

If your question isn’t covered here, our friendly team will be happy to help – just visit our contact page to get in touch.

What age can my child start singing lessons?

Most children can begin singing lessons from around age seven, when they’re able to concentrate, follow instructions, and control their voice safely. For younger children, we offer early years music experiences that build confidence, rhythm, and pitch awareness in a relaxed setting and support for vocal activities in schools.

Our tutors tailor each session to the child’s age and development, starting with simple songs, breathing exercises, and rhythm activities before introducing more focused vocal work. As they progress, lessons develop to include posture, diction, tone, and expressive performance. Singing from an early age helps children build musical awareness and gives them a lifelong connection to music and creativity.

What styles of singing do you teach?

We teach a wide range of styles to suit every child’s taste and ability. Pupils can explore pop, musical theatre, classical, folk, or contemporary music, and many try several genres before finding the one they love most.

Lessons are flexible and designed around each pupil’s voice and personality. Tutors help children understand how different styles use the voice in unique ways, encouraging versatility and creativity. From performing their favourite songs to learning stage confidence, every lesson is about helping them enjoy singing in the way that feels right for them.

Do pupils need any previous experience?

No previous experience is needed, just enthusiasm and a love of singing. Many children join our lessons having never sung outside school assemblies or on journeys in the car and quickly discover how capable they are.

Our tutors specialise in building confidence from the very first session, focusing on enjoyment and small achievements that help pupils feel comfortable using their voice. Over time, they develop skills in breathing, pitch control, rhythm, and musical awareness. For those already singing regularly, lessons provide the structure and feedback to help them progress even further.

Are there opportunities to perform?

Absolutely. We believe performing is a vital part of learning to sing. Pupils have opportunities to take part in school concerts, choir performances, and local or county-wide events throughout the year.

Performing helps children gain self-belief, learn teamwork, and experience the excitement of sharing their music with others. For those who prefer smaller audiences, tutors can arrange informal showcases or classroom performances to build confidence gradually. Many pupils go on to join our workshops or music groups, where they can perform regularly as part of a larger group.

Can my child take singing exams?

Yes, when they’re ready. Our tutors can guide pupils through graded vocal exams with recognised boards such as ABRSM or LCM. These exams are optional but can be a great way to set goals, measure progress, and celebrate achievement.

Exam preparation includes learning set pieces, developing aural skills, and sight-singing, all taught in a supportive and encouraging way. Tutors make sure the experience is positive and pressure-free, focusing on building confidence as much as skill. For some pupils, exams provide valuable milestones; for others, performing or songwriting may be their preferred route – and we’ll support whichever path suits your child best.
