The WORLD FOLK ENSEMBLE is one of Shropshire Music Service’s most vibrant and inclusive groups, welcoming string players of Grade 3 and above to explore folk music from across the globe.
This ensemble is about more than performance – it’s a journey through rhythm, melody, and tradition, helping young musicians discover the joy of making music that connects cultures and tells stories from every corner of the world.
Each rehearsal is a celebration of diversity and discovery.
Pupils learn tunes and styles from countries such as Ireland, Scotland, Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, and beyond, exploring everything from lively jigs and reels to soulful laments and traditional dances.
Through these pieces, players develop new skills in listening, improvisation, and ensemble awareness – all within a supportive, friendly environment.
Our tutors are passionate folk musicians who bring energy, skill, and cultural insight to every session.
They help students explore the stories behind each tune and understand how folk traditions continue to connect people across the world.
The World Folk Ensemble performs regularly at county concerts alongside other SMS groups, sharing their lively, distinctive sound with audiences.
Each performance gives pupils the thrill of playing live and celebrating global music together.
Beyond the music, the World Folk Ensemble offers lasting personal benefits.
Members grow in confidence, build friendships, and deepen their understanding of the world through shared creativity.
The friendly, inclusive atmosphere encourages everyone to take part, learn from others, and enjoy the unique spirit of folk music – its power to connect people through rhythm, culture, and the joy of playing together.

For young musicians who love to explore new sounds, connect with others, and expand their horizons, the World Folk Ensemble offers a truly unique experience. It’s not just about playing notes – it’s about discovering the world, one tune at a time.
